  • 2009-10 Varsity Basketball Schedule (updated 3/8/10)

    3/8/10 - Despite a great run in the NYSAISAA Tournament, the Bears (19-8) fell just short of a tournament championship, falling to #5 Rye Country Day School, 36-22, in the championship game Sunday morning. This was the first time since 2007 that IA reached the championship round of the NYSAIS Tournament.
    Congratulations on a great season, girls!

    3/6/10 - IA moved on to the championship game of the NYSAISAA Tournament, defeating #2 Hackley, 44-42, Friday evening in the semi-final round. Jill Fitzner once again led IA, scoring 20 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Lindsey Nowak added nine points and 11 rebounds, while Meghan Hennessy chipped in five points. The third-seeded Bears will face #5 Rye Country Day School in the championship, this Sunday, 11 a.m. at Fieldston School. Rye upset top-seeded Staten Island.

    3/5/10 - The Bears defeated Fieldston School, 51-41 in the opening round of the NYSAISAA Tournament on Thursday evening. Jill Fitzner led IA with 19 points, while Lindsey Nowak recorded 10 points and 14 rebounds. Megan Smith also added eight points in the win for the Bears. The girls will now play at Hackley Friday, 5 p.m. A win tonight would propel IA into Sunday's championship game.

    3/1/10 - IA varsity basketball has been selected to participate in the NYSAISAA Class C Basketball Championships. The Bears will open the tournament as the #3 seed and face the #6 seed, The Fieldston School, in Riverdale, NY, Thursday, March 4, 5:00 p.m. A win on Thursday would propel IA into the semifinal round scheduled for Friday. Stay tuned throughout the week for updates from New York City.

    2/25/10 - The Bears (17-7) closed out the regular season on a high note Wednesday evening, defeating Niagara Catholic, 50-32. Freshman Taylor Heinold led IA with 14 points, six steals and four rebounds. Jill Fitzner added 12 points and five rebounds. IA finished the season winning seven consecutive games and eight out of the last nine. They now await a possible postseason bid to the NYSAISAA Tournament, in New York City.

    2/23/10 - The six IA seniors were sent out on a winning note Monday evening in their final home game, knocking off Fredonia, 59-50. Senior Jill Fitzner led the Bears with 22 points, 12 rebounds and two steals. Junior Lindsay Nowak added 15 points, five rebounds and five steals. The win marked the second time this season that IA has defeated Fredonia. Despite that, the Bears are ranked the #6 small school in WNY with Fredonia ranked #3.
    Other IA seniors honored Monday night included Meghan Hennessy, Megan Smith, Julie Salisbury, Cassandra Pawlowski and Tara Quinn. The girls will close out their regular season with a contest Wednesday evening at Niagara Catholic.

    2/22/10 - In their last game before the winter break, IA defeated Christian Central Academy, 53-29. Jonabeth Zoldos led the Bears with 10 points, six rebounds and five steals, with Taylor Heinold and Natalie Schichtel adding six and four points, respectively. IA has just two regular season contests remaining, including tonight's Senior Night matchup vs. Fredonia. JV tip off is set for 5:00 with varsity to follow at 6:00.

    2/10/10 - The Bears saw five players score in double-digits, en route to a 69-40 win over Holland on Tuesday evening, in the Coaches vs. Cancer basketball event. Jill Fitzner led IA with 11 points, while Lindsey Nowak, Madison Kiernan, Taylor Heinold and Meghan Hennessy all added 10 points a piece. Nowak also pulled down 14 rebounds and added two blocks and two steals. This marks the fourth consecutive win for the Bears and brings their record to 14-7. They'll travel to Christian Central Academy for a game on Friday, before a week off for winter break.

    2/8/10 - IA senior Jill Fitzner led the Bears with 19 points, surpassing 1,000 for her career and leading IA to a 60-51 win over cross-town rival Frontier on Saturday afternoon. Fitzner, who added 11 rebounds, also recorded her third double-double in the last four games. Chelsey Rogowski chipped in nine points, three blocks and two steals, with Taylor Heinold adding eight points, five rebounds and two assists. The Bears will host Holland on Tuesday evening in the Coaches vs. Cancer event. Festivities begin at 5:00 with the JV game, followed by varsity at 6:30.

    2/5/10 - Led once again by a pair of double-doubles from Jill Fitzner and Lindsey Nowak, the Bears handed rival Mt. Mercy a 57-53 loss on Thursday evening. Fitzner led IA in scoring with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Nowak added 17 points and 17 boards. This marks the second consecutive 17 rebound performance for Nowak, and third straight game with at least 16 boards. Freshman Taylor Heinold contributed with another strong performance, recording nine points, four rebounds and two blocks. Fitzner is now just three points shy of 1,000 for her career heading into Saturday's matchup at Frontier at 1:30.

    2/1/10 - The Bears got back on the winning track Friday night, knocking off Williamsville East, 66-55. Jill Fitzner lead all scorers with 25 points and nine rebounds, while Lindsey Nowak turned in a big game with ten points, 17 rebounds and three steals. Megan Smith also chipped in seven points, four rebounds and an assist. Fitzner is now just 22 points shy of 1,000 for her career and will have a chance to surpass the mark Thursday evening when IA hosts Mt. Mercy.

    1/27/10 - IA faced a tough Nichols team Tuesday evening, dropping a 67-58 decision on the road. Despite the loss, Jill Fitzner and Lindsey Nowak each posted a double-double, with Fitzner leading the game in scoring with 23 points, ten rebounds and three steals. Nowak added ten points, 16 rebounds and three blocks.

    1/21/10 - The Bears bounced back from the weekend, with a 61-43 win over Tapestry Charter School on Wednesday evening. Jill Fitzner led IA with 14 points. Lindsey Nowak added nine points, eight rebounds and two blocks, while Meghan Hennessy contributed eight points and two assists. The Bears next contest is next Tuesday, Jan. 26, when they take on perennial rival Nichols.

    1/19/10 - IA saw their record fall to 9-6 over the weekend, dropping a pair of games in a tournament hosted by Our Lady of Mercy in Rochester. The Bears fell 55-36 to the host school on Saturday afternoon, before dropping a close 53-49 decision to Nazareth in the consolation round. Lindsey Nowak, who was named to the all-tournament team, led IA with 10 points and 20 rebounds vs. Nazareth, while Jill Fitzner added nine points, 10 rebounds and two steals. Starting point guard Meghan Hennessy chipped in five points and six rebounds in the loss to Our Lady of Mercy. The girls look to bounce back this week when they host Tapestry Charter School on Wednesday evening.

    1/14/10 - The Bears won their third consecutive game, defeating Christian Central Academy, 64-29, on Wednesday evening. Taylor Heinold once again lead IA with a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Jonabeth Zoldos continued her strong play of late, adding 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Madison Kiernan and Julie Salisbury chipped in nine and six points, respectively.
    The Bears will now hit the road this weekend for the Our Lady of Mercy Tournament in Rochester.

    1/12/10 - IA improved their record to 8-4 overall, including five wins in their last six games, with a 63-26 win over Buffalo Seminary on Monday afternoon. Freshman Taylor Heinold lead the Bears with her first career double-double, pouring in 13 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Jonabeth Zoldos added 11 points and three steals while Meghan Hennessy chipped in eight points. The girls will host Christian Central Academy this Wednesday, before heading to the Rochester Tournament this weekend.

    1/7/10 - The varsity Bears (7-4) handed Holland a 17-point defeat on Wednesday evening, coming home with a 59-42 victory. Jill Fitzner and Lindsey Nowak lead IA, each recording a double-double. Fitzner recorded 23 points and ten boards, with Nowak notching 11 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. This was Nowak's second consecutive double-double. Jonabeth Zoldos also chipped in seven points for the Bears. The girls next contest is next Monday, when they host Buffalo Seminary at 4:30.

    1/6/10 - The girls played four games over the Christmas break, compiling a 3-1 record, bringing their season record to 6-4. The varsity Bears won their tournament by defeating O'Hara 64-50, followed by a 61-44 win over St. Mary's. Jill Fitzner lead all scorers with a combined 39 points and 16 rebounds in the two games. Meg Smith added 12 points and two assists in the first game, while freshman Taylor Heinold chipped in six points and a steal in the second game. Senior Meghan Hennessy also contributed 12 points in the win over St. Mary's.
    The girls split a pair of games in the Holy Angels Tournament, defeating Nardin, 46-42, in the opening round, and losing to Holy Angels, 44-49, in the championship game. Jill Fitzner lead IA with 18 points and six boards vs. Nardin. Despite the loss to Holy Angels, Lindsey Nowak had a great game, finishing with 15 points, 17 rebounds and two assists. Madison Kiernan added seven points in the loss.
    The girls will travel to Holland this evening, before hosting Buffalo Seminary next Monday, January 11.

    12/18/09 - The Varsity Bears dropped a 55-44 decision to Mt. St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon, dropping their record to 3-3 on the season. The girls will now prepare for the Immaculata Tournament this weekend, and their first round matchup with O'Hara, Friday @ 8:30 p.m.

    12/14/09 - Last Thursday's game vs. Buffalo Seminary has been rescheduled for Monday, January 11, 4:30 p.m. at Immaculata Academy. The Bears will plaay at Mt. St. Mary's this Wednesday, before hosting the annual Immaculata Tournament this weekend.

    12/8/09 - Despite trailing 22-20 at halftime, IA (3-2) came back to defeat Fredonia, 52-44, on Monday evening. Jill Fitzner lead the way for the Bears with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Lindsey Nowak added 12 points and five boards. The girls will host Buffalo Seminary in their first home contest, on Thursday afternoon.

    12/7/09 - The Bears (2-2) fell to Orchard Park, 47-59, in the championship game of the West Seneca Tournament on Thursday. Jill Fitzner and Chelsey Rogowski scored 12 and eight points, respectively, and were both named to the all-tournament team. The girls travel to Fredonia on Monday afternoon and return home for a Thursday evening matchup with Buffalo Seminary.

    12/2/09 - IA improved to 2-1 on the young season, upsetting West Seneca West, 63-46, Tuesday afternoon, in the opening round of the West Seneca Tournament. Jill Fitzner lead the Bears with 13 points, while Jonabeth Zoldos and Chelsey Rogowski added 12 points a piece. The girls will face Orchard Park in the championship game of the tournament on Thursday afternoon.

    11/30/09 - The Bears (1-1) opened their season over the weekend, spliting two games in the Pioneer Tournament. The girls defeated rival Mt. Mercy on Friday, 55-37, but fell to Pioneer, 54-41, in the championship game on Saturday. Jill Fitzner scored a team-high 17 points in both contests and was named to the All-Tournament team, along with teammate Lindsey Nowak. IA will play in the West Seneca Tournament this Tuesday and Thursday.

    2/25/10 - Despite their final game (vs. Niagara Catholic) being cancelled, the JV Bears (14-8) finished the season winning four consecutive games and eight of the last nine. Most recently, they defeated Christian Central Academy before the winter break, followed by a 38-14 win over Fredonia on Tuesday evening. Congratulations to the JV Bears on another great season!

    2/10/10 - The JV Bears brought their record to 12-8 on the season, with a 45-32 win over Holland on Tuesday evening. Bridget Philbin led IA with 21 points.

    1/27/10 - The girls won their second consecutive game, knocking off Nichols, 41-23, on Tuesday evening. Bridget Philbin led IA with nine points and ten rebounds, while Genevieve Coughlin added seven points.

    1/19/10 - The JV Bears split a pair of games over the weekend in a tournament hosted by Our Lady of Mercy in Rochester. Saturday's game vs. the host school saw the girls lose 55-25, with Bridget Philbin leading IA with six points. With a stronger performance on Sunday afternoon, the JV Bears knocked off local-rival Nichols, 36-27, where Philbin added another 17 points.

    1/15/10 - The JV squad defeated Christian Central Academy on Wednesday evening, 46-16. Rachel Moll led IA with 12 points while Alex Rosenlund added ten. The girls next contests are this weekend in Rochester at the Our Lady of Mercy Tournament.

    1/6/10 - The JV Bears split four games over the Christmas break, bringing their season record to 4-6 overall. Gen Coughlin and Kathryn Halloran lead IA with eight points each in the 48-15 win over O'Hara, while Bailey Gawley lead the Bears in the win over Nardin. Bridget Philbin chipped in eight points per game in the two losses to St. Mary's and Holy Angels.

    12/18/09 - The JV Bears lost a tough contest to Mt. St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon, 47-43. Bridget Philbin lead IA with 13 points, while Rachel Moll added 11 points. The girls will now host O'Hara on Friday evening in the opening round of the Immaculata Tournament.

    12/8/09 - Immaculata dropped a close game to Fredonia, 31-27, on Monday evening, bringing their record to 2-3. The JV Bears had a few attempts late in the game to tie it up, but a late turnover cemented the win for Fredonia. The girls will host Buffalo Seminary on Thursday evening.

    12/7/09 - The JV Bears (2-2) finished the West Seneca tournament on a high note, defeating West Seneca West 35-19, in the consolation game.

    12/2/09 - IA fell to 1-2 on the season, falling to West Seneca West 41-50, in the opening round of the West Seneca Tournament, on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears will face West Seneca East in the consolation round on Thursday afternoon.

    11/30/09 - The JV Bears (1-1) opened their season over the Thanksgiving break, spliting a pair of games in the Pioneer Tournament. The girls lost to Mt. Mercy 30-33 on Friday, but came back with a 31-20 win over host Pioneer on Saturday. Sophomore Bridget Philbin lead IA with 12 points in the win over Pioneer. The girls will play in the West Seneca Tournament this Tuesday and Thursday.
